Hair Removal

IPL

Intense Pulse Light produces heat in the hair follicle causing damage to the cells, but without removing or damaging the outer layers of the skin. If enough damage is done, it will prevent the hair from growing any further. Several treatment sessions are needed at the beginning due to the natural hair growth cycle, most effective during the "anagen" phase when new hairs start to grow.

IPL is particularly suitable for darker hair on light skin. It is a method of permanent hair reduction which utilises short bursts of very bright light. Whilst a laser uses light with one specific wavelength, IPL uses a range of different wavelengths. It is therefore like using a group of lasers all at the same time and enables a greater variety of skin types and hair colours to be treated.

The Ellipse IPL machine uses a patented double filter to reduce the chances of side effects such as burning and pigmentation. The large treatment applicator means a greater area can be treated in the same time compared with the smaller sizes of other applicators and a typical beard takes half an hour to treat.

The average treatment time to remove a full beard is likely to be about a year with IPL and nine months for the genital region.

IPL treatment is not nearly as painful as laser treatment. The Ellipse machine used at the clinic involves minimal discomfort only.

Due to the fact that hair grows in cycles, the optimum treatment interval is 6 to 8 weeks. This therefore facilitates cost effective hair removal.

Blond, grey and white hair can be treated with a substance called Lipoxome, which is available from the clinic. If rigorously applied, it enables these colours to be treated effectively.

IPL cannot be said to be permanent as there is not yet sufficient experience with it. It does however reduce the hair problem much quicker than electrolysis and experience shows minimal, if any regrowth.

There is a misperception that several days of hair growth is required for IPL. This is not the case. As long as the area to be treated by the therapist can be seen, the area can be shaved on the morning of treatment. It is recommended to mark out the area with a few dots from a felt tip pen as well. However at the test patch consultation hair needs to be easily visible for assessment.

Adverse effects are uncommon. Mild post-treatment redness settles after 24 hours. Occasionally increased or decreased pigmentation may occur but this should resolve over time.

Appointments can be scheduled to coincide with appointments for Dr Curtis, counselling and speech therapy, thus reducing the inconvenience of multiple visits to various places.

In summary, IPL provides a safe, effective, cost effective and potentially a less time consuming method of hair removal than some other alternative treatments and keeping undergoing an active course of IPL and Electrolysis at the same time is not advisable.

Pain Free Electrolysis

Transhealth is unique in being able to offer pain free electrolysis. Local anaesthetic injections are used to instantaneously numb the required area with minimal discomfort at the time of injection. The face and genital areas are particularly sensitive and are suitable for the pain free method.

The anaesthetic lasts 1 to 3 hours depending upon the site treated and individual variation, allowing prolonged treatment sessions. With sequential injections sessions up to 6 hours are possible.

If desired, 2 to 3 whole days of treatment can be booked to maximise time efficiency and reduce the repeated need for allowing 2 to 3 days' growth prior to treatment. Compared to standard electrolysis client comfort is therefore greatly enhanced and this leads to faster electrolysis as there are fewer recovery pauses. Total treatment time is therefore shorter, thus maximising cost effectiveness.

The intensity of treatment is greater than standard electrolysis and therefore the potential trauma to the skin is also increased. Those with sensitive or scar prone skin may not be suitable for this method, however the experienced electrologist will be able to advise at the time of consultation.

It is particularly important that diabetics must have good glucose control. The local anaesthetic contains adrenalin and therefore patients with certain forms of heart disease or on certain medication may not be suitable for this treatment.

Hair Removal for Gender Reassignment Surgery

The genital area (MTF) and donor sites (FTM) are amenable to treatment by Electrolysis, Painfree Electrolysis and IPL. Regardless of the method of treatment it is likely to take, in the region of 9 months (dependant upon the individual) to remove hair prior surgery so this should be factored into the project time scale.
