The London Gender Clinic

Gender Dysphoria

Please make an appointment to see Dr Curtis if:
  • You are not sure where you fit on the spectrum
  • You wish to discuss gender expression
  • For facilitation of physical change

Initial Consultation

The initial consultation will be for 1 hour with Dr Curtis. You will be asked for a detailed account of your life to date, including family, upbringing, school, work and relationships as well as a discussion regarding your gender history. Assessment, diagnosis and initial discussion will take place with initial recommendations.

What should I bring to my initial appointment?

Any relevant documents regarding previous treatment in the form of letters form clinicians, statutory declarations/deed poll documents and if you wish a biography of your gender history.

Follow Up

Follow up consultations typically take 30 minutes during which time further discussion of hormonal intervention, referrals for surgery and discussion of other issues across the full spectrum of patient activity. Facilitation of gendered living with documentation to support diagnoses are also available.
Dr. Curtis provides reports for the purposes of obtaining a Gender Recognition Certificate.

Waiting times

The typical waiting times for an initial consultation are 2 weeks and 1 week for a follow up consultation.

Do you see patients younger than 16yrs of age?

No, but patients 16-18 year old, with the full support of their parents who must attend the consultations are seen at the clinic.

How many times will I have to see Dr Curtis?

From a patient safety and good care perspective it is necessary for patients to undertake a series of consultations as appropriate follow up, particularly when and if hormone therapy has commenced.

Consultation schedule:
  • Initial Consultation
  • Follow up consultations at 3 monthly intervals
  • Thereafter 6 monthly depending upon patient progress

Unless this level of commitment to your care is accepted and undertaken, it is ethically inappropriate to prescribe medication. Ongoing care is in everyone’s best interests and will facilitate a more favourable long term outcome. All new patients are expected to agree to the above principles of care prior to their initial appointment.

Could my PCT fund my consultations?

It is possible to arrange PCT funding to obtain care at the London Gender Clinic and several PCTs do currently commission my services, however this can be difficult to obtain, particularly in the current NHS financial climate. You will need to work with your GP to secure funding from your PCT.

Provision of Cross Gendered Hormones

Hormones are not typically prescribed on the first visit. However, each case will be assessed on an individual basis depending on WPATH guideline fulfilment. In appropriate cases the effects and side effects of hormones can be discussed, prescribed and monitored.

Many patients falsely believe that obtaining hormones over the internet is a cheaper way to obtain medication. Patient testimonial indicates that the cost of hormones from the London Gender Clinic is very much less than those obtained from the internet. The cost therefore becomes very competitive even taking in to account the cost of the consultation, which provides much greater benefit in addition. Dr Curtis operates in a highly ethical manner with patient safety at the forefront of treatment.
Patients DO NOT need to have lived in role prior to the prescription of hormones. The clinic has the facility to dispense medication as necessary and blood tests can be arranged via the private laboratory located locally who provides a very efficient service. Chromosome testing is available upon request.

Referrals for gender reassignment surgery

Appropriate referrals for gender reassignment surgery can be made to the surgeon of the patient’s choice following appropriate discussion and informed consent. Dr Curtis refers to surgeons around the world after patients have lived for one year full time in role.
